Biography

Hendricus (Henry) was born in 1893 in Uden, Noord-Brabant.[1] He was the son of Johannes van Iperen and Adriana Maria van der Burgt.

Henry (van Iperen) van Eperen migrated from Netherlands to United States.

The family immigrated to North America with their five children, leaving Uden on May 14 1900 according to the Uden population register. [2] Maria and her five children, Walter 11, George 9, Martin 7, Henry 4 and Hannah 2, left Rotterdam on the Holland-America Line's ship Maasdam on May 3 1900. The fare was paid for by J van Iperen, her husband, who had apparently traveled to America before them. They arrived in New York, New York, United States, on May 15 1900 on the way to their final destination of De Pere, Brown County, Wisconsin.[3]

The family settled in Little Chute, Outagamie Co., Wisconsin, United States, where John and his sons Walter and George worked as laborers on June 1 1905. The family (listed as either Eppuren or Eppeeren) lived in a house which they owned with a mortgage with seven children: Walter 18, George 16, Martin 13, Henry 12, Annie 9, Johny 4 and Gilbert 9/12th, the last two born in Wisconsin.[4]

In the 1910 United States Census on April 10 1910, the family (listed as Van Eperen) had seven children with the addition of Arthur, age 3. Gilbert (Gijsbert) was not listed as he had died.[5] In America, the family name became van Eperen (or Van Eperen or Vaneperen) presumably because the Dutch "I" sounded like the English "E".
Private Henry (van Iperen) van Eperen served in the United States Army in World War I
Service started: before jul 9 1918
Unit(s): 35th Co 161st DB, Co "C" 343rd Infantry, Co "F" 112th Infantry
Service ended: after apr 30 1919

Henry registered for military service in World War I on June 5 1917 in St Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. He was working as a machinist helper at the Great Northern Rail Road in St Paul. He was 23 years old, single, of tall height and medium build, brown eyes and black hair.[6]

Henry, age 23, married Rosa Forcier (Rose), age 17, on October 20 1917 in Forest Lake, Washington, Minnesota.[7]

He entered the United States Army before June 22 1918 when he was attached as a private to 35th Company, 161st D.B. at Camp Grant near Rockport, Illinois.[8]

Henry was naturalized an United States citizen on August 1 1918 at Camp Grant.[9] His home address was listed as 130 Viola Street, St. Paul. His Declaration of Intention for naturalization was filed October 30 1914 in Little Chute when he was 21 and stated that he was 5' 11" and 158 lbs with lightbrown hair, medium complexion and brown eyes.[10] Henry was attached to Company "C" 343rd Infantry on July 9 1918 at Camp Grant[11] and was shortly shipped to France to join the fighting. He went to Company "F" of the 112th Infantry in October 1918 where he remained until shipped back to the United States.[12] Company "F" 112th Infantry was transported on USS Pocahontas from St. Nazaire, France, leaving April 19 1919 and arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 30 1919.[13] His emergency contact was Mrs. Rose Vaneperen, wife, 120 Viola Street, Saint Paul, Minnesota.

On January 5 1920, Henry, age 26, and Henry's wife Rose, age 20, were living at 120 Viola Street, St Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. His brother, Martin, age 27, was single and living with them. Henry and Martin were working as molder helpers in an iron foundry.[14]

On April 4 1930, Henry, age 36, and Rose, age 30, were renting a place for $33 a month at 595 1st Avenue in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Henry was working as a molder in a brass foundry.[15]

Rose's death record has not been found although an uncited source (see Rose's Research Notes) reports that she passed away on April 2 1930 in Forest Lake, Washington, Minnesota, at age 30. This is contradicted by the 1930 United States Census as they were living in Milwaukee on April 4th (see above). Henry remarried on June 5 1935 so he and Rose were not married on that date.

Henry, age 41, married Mary Ann Pekar, age 30, widow of Anton John with one child, on June 15 1935 in Milwaukee.[16]

On April 11 1940, Henry, age 46, and Mary, age 34, were renting a place for $44 a month at 1242 W Washington in Milwaukee. Henry was working as a molder in a steel foundry earning $1,550 a year. In the household were Mary's daughter Mary John, age 12, Theresa van Eperen, niece, age 7, and John van Eperen, nephew, age 22, a laborer at a steel foundry.[17]

On April 10 1950, Henry, age 56, and Mary, age 44, were living at 3466 South 15th Place in Milwaukee. Henry was working as a foundry foreman at a manufacturer company of brass molding earning $1,550 a year. In the household were Mary's daughter Mary Bressers, age 22, a general office clerk in a manufacturing company of farm equipment, earning $1,920 a year, and her husband Joseph A, Bressers, age 29, a stock clerk manufacturing company of hay machinery.[18]

He passed away in 1969 in Milwaukee at age 75[19][20] and was buried in the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Cudahy, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.[21]

Mary passed away seventeen years later in 1986 in Milwaukee at age 81[22][23] and was buried in the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Cudahy.[24]
